Yes, The Sardine Can is a great place for breakfast, and is fine for hearty fare for lunch & dinner as well, with some nice menu surprises like jambalaya. It's not gourmet fare by any means, but most dishes are passable, and the staples (like the burgers) are very good indeed.

A rustic place suited to its location, there is also a nice patio in good weather, though that side of the 'Can' doesn't offer much of a view.

I too enjoy not only walking into this place but also walking out with my two favorites, the German Chocolate cake and the Red Velvet cake! I turned my brother-in-law onto the apple cupcakes. My sister really likes pretty much anything I bring to her from the shop. However, she does scarf up the Earthquake cake along with the Red Velvet. The pecan tarts and the sweet potato pies were also a big hit! My 13 year old has me picking up at least two of the large chocolate chip cookies whenever I go in there!

Everyone who you encounter is always courteous and none have you waiting. The shop is always bright and clean. I have made it a point to stay away from there since I always leave with at least two slices of cake but there has been times when it has been much more!

I do severely disagree with one part of the article: What is the problem with offering something that represents the San Francisco 49ers? Just wait until they win the Super Bowl, folks will be lined up for miles to get some 49er Super Bowl pudding or cake!

Looks like this site died a year ago--don't see any postings here dated in 2011. This kind of site has great potential, but if no one gets into it and posts anything, then it's just another dead site.

Anna - first thank you for responding to the post. It’s always good to hear from anyone reading the blog. Second, we both know past city leaderships have made some ‘stupid’ decisions that have caused the troubles in Vallejo today. There are tons of websites that reflect that. However, the focus of the post is to acknowledge that maybe finally, finally, someone’s getting it right and that the city is moving in the right direction.

For example, I’m sure you heard about the Mare Island Studios, LLC deal with the city. While it’s not a done deal yet, the reaction has been positive that it will eventually happen. Not only that, but while we didn’t get a Trader Joes, from my experience, Fresh and Easy which is planning to come and IMO, is the better alternative based in looking at one of their stores in Southern California. I don’t know about you, but I do see this as a sign of progress here in Vallejo.

Speaking as an outsider, four months after moving here, I opened a mobile bookstore. I recognized the city not having either a big chain retailer or independent bookstore, so with the help of my wife, decide we were going to open our own. The response from people who bought books in the two years I’ve been here has been more than positive.

I do understand your frustration, especially when there’s a lot more than can be done here. We shouldn’t overlook the small steps taken to get this city back on track. Maybe this is too Polyannaish a view, but so far, I’m willing to be patient and give it a chance. The way businesses are turned away is something I hope will be discussed more of so it can give people and companies who do want to invest here a chance.

vallejo is collectively the stupidest town I can think of. they still want to be a bedroom community. they turned away Fairfield mall when it could have been here along with all that tax revenue. no wonder they're bankrupt! they're STUPID. they thought mare island was all they needed. that and building more & more houses everywhere while ignoring business. anyone who wants to earn a livable income has to get on the freeway (or $$$$ ferry) to get to work. what have they ever done to bring Bart under the bridge so people from sac city, Vjo, Benicia, napa have an affordable transit alternative that wd keep them off I-80??? you wanna go out to eat, or do something other than movies here in vallajo? yr right back on the freeway. for over 20 years what has vallejo done with the available waterfront area?? outsiders, shut up. you dont know what you're talking about. way too much history and lost opportunity. I may live here but regret it every day of my life. even grocery shopping I do in concord, Oakland, or Berkeley. this place sucks.

I agree with the post and find myself wishing we had just two thing: A book store and Trader Joe's. The impact would be huge on this area! However, we do have a full service bead store in Vallejo...538C Florida St

I believe the citizens who know better, agree with you Ms. Adams. You read these blogs and newspapers and you wonder what in the hell is going on here? Could it be Vallejo, who depended on Mare Island for years, feels like a jilted lover, not sure if she'll be good enough for any man again?

I digress, but clearly Vallejo needs to find more sources of revenue and get out of these awful bad deals with companies that don't give a damn about the folks who live here.

The ferry terminal does need more business to make it more 'appealing', but with a bike shop and giant dolls inside, it doesn't look like a place that people frequent outside riding the ferry. I agree the city fathers need to be serious about concentrating on fixing the building if their goal is to promote a positive image for Vallejo. There is so much potential that is untapped, yet because of whatever reason, that potential is being wasted.
I can only hope the stimulus money being allocated to fixing up the terminal will be used to house another tenant because Panama Red can't do it by itself in bringing in a crowd on a continuous basis. A bike shop and giant dolls are nice, but all it does is use up space other stores like a sundry and another eatery could use.
